Hold Your Shape: A Workshop on Boundaries Through Clay

Why does setting a boundary so often come with guilt? Why do we say yes when we mean no—and call it kindness? Whether it’s people-pleasing, overexplaining, or disappearing altogether, most of us weren’t taught how to set clear, respectful boundaries. This workshop is a space to unpack that through clay.

We’ll explore the different types of boundaries and reflect on where yours might need more clarity or support. Through simple journaling prompts and group discussion (always optional), you’ll be invited to consider how you relate to boundaries, what gets in the way, and what holding your shape could look like in practice.

Then we move to the clay. Using basic hand-building techniques, you’ll create a piece that reflects your own patterns, edges, or intentions. The goal isn’t to make something perfect, but to explore where you’re at.

This is a single-session introduction to The Art of Becoming, a 6-week clay-based journey in self-inquiry, nervous system repair, and creative reflection, launching at The Clay Warehouse this fall. The space is small, the group intimate, and the process slow, honest, and grounding. No experience with clay or coaching needed—just a willingness to explore.

About the Instructor:

Kat Pino is a ceramicist and certified life coach based in Vancouver. She’s best known for creating custom dinnerware for restaurants like Published on Main, The Acorn, and Maenam, and for teaching clay workshops that centre plate throwing technique.

Alongside her ceramics practice, Kat has spent the past several years supporting people through personal transitions as a certified life coach. And now she is bringing together ceramics and coaching to create spaces where people can reflect, reconnect, and move through change.

Her project The Art of Becoming blends over a decade of clay practice with training in -trauma-informed coaching, psychology and embodied self-awareness. It’s not therapy, and it’s not your typical pottery class, just a space to slow down, get honest, and shape what’s next with your hands and your attention.

Kat’s approach is grounded, intuitive, and gently challenging. She’s not here to give you answers but to help you ask better questions and stay with yourself while you do.

What’s involved:

This class is a chance to slow down and get your hands in the clay. This class, you will be concentrating on hand building one small piece (nothing bigger than what fits in your hands) while working with journaling prompts to reflect on whatever’s present for you.

What’s included:

All clay, tools, and equipment are included in this workshop, as well as a small journal for writing in that students can take with them.

Once the class is over, your work will be fired in our kiln and will either be left raw if desired, or will be glazed. Once your piece is glaze fired, then it will be ready for pick up. Please allow up to three weeks for your piece to be ready for pick up. Once the pieces are done they will be placed on our pick up shelf. Please bring an appropriate container/bag to transport your piece. Pieces will only be held for up to 30 days starting from the class date.

Students are also required to sign a waiver at the beginning of class.

Time and Date:

Friday, July 18th from 5:30 PM to 8 PM

No Clay Experience Required:

This class is ideal for those new to clay, seeking a different method than the potter's wheel, or looking to refresh old skills.

Ensure you can commit to all class dates:

We plan our class dates far in advance to provide adequate notice for you to plan your life around our 6-week course. We ask that future students registering for this class commit to all class dates. We understand that life happens, and we do allow for one free make-up session. Make-up sessions are intended for students to catch up on missed class time and are not supervised by the teacher.

Cancellation Policy:

Cancellations are accepted up to 7 days before the first workshop date, and all cancellations are subject to a $50 administration fee. Cancellations made 6 days or less before the workshop will not be refunded. Once a workshop has begun, refunds will not be processed. We are a small business and must fill all spots in each class to pay our teachers and supply all materials and equipment.

Students attending the workshop must be at least 18 years old:

Our studio is a mature space designed for adults looking to unwind from their daily lives.
