Designing & Throwing Repeatable Forms for a Matching Set

WHEEL THROWING EXPERIENCE REQUIRED – Students must confidently centre clay on the wheel and throw a 4" cylinder. This workshop is for those with intermediate-level skills; we won’t be spending time on the basics of wheel throwing.

Workshop Overview:
Take your wheel throwing skills to the next level with The Bowl Blueprint, led by ceramic artist and production potter Scott from Mise Tableware. This three-week immersive class focuses on designing, throwing, and refining bowls that match in both shape and size—perfect for creating a cohesive set.

Instead of making a single statement piece, you’ll learn how to plan, measure, and throw with precision so every bowl you make works beautifully alongside the others. Whether your goal is a stack of soup bowls, a pair of serving pieces, or a matching breakfast set, you’ll develop the skills and mindset needed to throw repeat forms consistently—a hallmark of both production pottery and refined studio work.

Workshop Highlights:

Week 1 – Design & First Set Size

• Introduction to bowl design: proportion, shape, and intended use
• Strategies for consistent measuring and shaping
• Throwing the first size in your set, aiming for multiple matching bowls

Week 2 – Second Size & Refining Techniques

• Building on Week 1 skills to throw a second size for your set
• Using callipers and profile guides to match proportions across sizes
• Troubleshooting inconsistencies and improving repeatability

Week 3 – Trimming & Finishing the Set

• Trimming all bowls for uniform weight and foot design
• Refining curves, lips, and edges for a cohesive look
• Optional decorative touches for a unified style

About the Instructor:
Scott, co-owner of The Clay Warehouse and founder of Mise Tableware, is a production potter known for his precision, clean design, and ability to throw consistent forms quickly. His approach blends traditional skill with modern design sensibilities, and in this workshop, he’ll share his process for creating bowls that not only function beautifully but also work together as part of a set.

Location: The Clay Warehouse - #10-1770 McLean Ave. Port Coquitlam, BC, V4C 4 K8

Dates/Times:

Thursday Nov 26, Dec 3, and Dec 10 from 5:30 - 8 PM

Materials: All necessary materials are provided, including clay, tools, and firing services, as well as studio glazes.

After the Workshop:
Pieces will be dried, bisque-fired, and ready for glazing. Students may pick up their bisque pieces in the following weeks.  all pieces will be held for up to 3 week following the class.

Intermediate Clay Experience Required:

Students must confidently centre clay on the wheel and throw a 4" cylinder. This workshop is for those with intermediate-level skills; we won’t be spending time on the basics of wheel throwing.

We plan our class dates far in advance to provide adequate notice for you to plan your life around our courses. We ask that future students registering for this class commit to all class dates. No make up sessions are given for special workshops.

Cancellation Policy:

Cancellations are accepted up to 7 days before the first workshop date, and all cancellations are subject to a 15% administration fee. Cancellations made 6 days or less before the workshop will not be refunded. Once a workshop has begun, refunds will not be processed. We are a small business and must fill all spots in each class to pay our teachers and supply all materials and equipment.
