Ready to push your pottery skills to the next level? If you've completed our CW 102 workshop or have solid wheel-throwing experience, this advanced course is designed for you! The Clay Warehouse 103 Advanced Wheel Throwing workshop is for potters who are comfortable with the basics and intermediate techniques, such as centering and pulling taller forms, and are looking to explore more complex projects.
In this class, we’ll dive into creating larger, more intricate forms like vases, serving platters, and multi-component pieces. You’ll refine your control over more advanced techniques like altering thrown forms, throwing taller while keeping stability in mind, throwing multiple pieces and connecting them to create even more complex items. There will be projects in. mind, but please come ready with some areas you’d like to refine.
Moving beyond intermediate skills can be challenging, but this course is designed to give you the time and space to explore your creative potential while refining the technical details of your craft. You’ll receive personalized feedback and guidance to help you overcome common advanced throwing hurdles, like making larger pieces with consistency and precision.
This class will prepare you for even more specialized studio practices, giving you the confidence to tackle more ambitious projects. With a focus on refining your style and improving your technical skills, you’ll leave this class with a deeper understanding of advanced wheel throwing and an elevated artistic approach to your pottery.
Clay experience required: Students should be proficient at throwing consistent cylinders and larger forms (minimum 6 inches in height), as well as trimming and attaching components like handles or spouts. If you’re not confident in these skills, please consider our CW 102 workshop before enrolling in this advanced course
Ensure you can commit to all class dates: We schedule classes well in advance, so please plan ahead to attend all sessions of this 6-week course. We allow for one make-up session, which is not supervised by the instructor but gives students a chance to catch up. Make-up sessions are intended to catch up on missed class time and are not teacher-led.
Cancellation Policy: Cancellations are accepted up to 7 days before the first class, and all cancellations are subject to a $50 administration fee. Cancellations made within 6 days of the workshop’s start date will not be refunded. Once a workshop begins, no refunds will be issued.
Age requirement: This workshop is open to students aged 18 and older, as our studio environment is designed for adults looking to hone their craft in a focused setting.
Disclaimer for CW 103: Advanced Wheel Throwing
This is an advanced-level workshop designed for experienced potters who are ready to refine their skills and take on more complex techniques. Participants must meet the following prerequisites to ensure they can fully benefit from the class:
- Experience: Students should have completed multiple beginner and intermediate wheel-throwing workshops or equivalent training elsewhere.
- Skill Level: Students must be proficient at centering at least 1.5 kilograms (3.3 lbs) of clay and throwing consistent, well-formed cylinders (minimum 6 inches tall) without assistance.
- Comfort with Clay: Students should have a solid understanding of trimming, shaping, and basic glazing techniques.
