**WHEEL THROWING EXPERIENCE REQUIRED - Students must be able to center 3-5 lbs of clay on the wheel confidently pull walls. This workshop is for those with experience; Less time will be used reviewing the basics of wheel throwing.
Ready to take your wheel-throwing skills into the world of complex, functional pottery? This three-week intensive workshop is designed for advanced potters who are confident on the wheel and ready to tackle one of the most rewarding forms to create: the teapot.
Over three consecutive Tuesdays —June 10, 17, & 24—this advanced-level class will guide you through the thoughtful design, precise construction, and refined finishing of a fully functional teapot. From lid and body to spout and handle, every element will be carefully considered to create a piece that is both beautiful and fully operational.
Workshop Schedule & Focus
- Week 1 (June 10, 5:30–8:30 PM 3 Hours): Teapot Design & Throwing — We’ll begin with an in-depth discussion of teapot design and functionality, followed by throwing demos of each component. You’ll learn tips and techniques for achieving balance, proportion, and function in all parts of your teapot.
- Week 2 (June 17, 5:30–8:30 PM 3 Hours): Trimming & Assembly — This week focuses on construction. We’ll trim and refine all pieces and assemble the full teapot with close attention to alignment, pour-ability, and lid fit.
- Week 3 (June 24, 5:30–7:30 PM 2 Hours): Surface & Glazing — We’ll wrap up the course with surface design and glazing. You’ll finish your piece with intention, exploring how surface complements form and functionality.
This class is for those who want to explore a complete, multi-component project that requires technical skill, patience, and a deep understanding of form and function.
Clay experience required:
This is an advanced-level course. Students must be able to confidently center and throw between 3–5 lbs of clay without assistance. You should have a strong grasp of trimming, attaching components (such as handles). If you're still refining these skills, we recommend enrolling in CW 102 before attempting this workshop.
Ensure you can commit to all class dates:
This course is scheduled as a three-part series with no make-up classes. Please only register if you are available for all sessions. Consistent attendance is crucial for following through the full process from start to finish.
Cancellation Policy:
Cancellations are accepted up to 7 days before the first class and are subject to a $50 administration fee. No refunds will be given within 6 days of the start date or once the workshop begins.
Age requirement:
This workshop is open to students aged 18 and up, as our classes are structured for adults who are serious about advancing their studio practice.
Disclaimer for Advanced Teapot Workshop
This is an advanced-level workshop, and students must meet the following prerequisites:
- Experience: Multiple intermediate or advanced-level workshops completed, or equivalent experience outside of The Clay Warehouse.
- Skill Level: Confidently centering and throwing 3–5 lbs of clay, trimming well-formed pieces, and attaching components like spouts and handles.
- Focus & Readiness: Students should be prepared for a focused and technical class environment that prioritizes both functional success and aesthetic refinement.
