Workshop Duration: One-day workshop (2.5 hours in length)
Dates/Times:
Monday, October 20th from 5:30PM - 8:00PM
Workshop Description:
In this workshop, students will learn how to slab-build a cup or mug with a secret twist — a hidden rattling chamber! Using premade clay slabs, we will work step-by-step to assemble false-bottom cups with the help of templates. Students will have the freedom to make small adjustments to the shape and size, allowing for a touch of personal flair in each piece.
We will explore techniques to ensure that the clay pieces inside the rattle chamber can move freely, both during construction and after glazing. Special attention will be given to ventilation strategies that reduce the risk of explosions in the kiln, as well as different methods for sealing the chamber after firing. Along the way, we will discuss design considerations, tips for clean assembly, and glazing approaches to make your cup not only functional, but delightfully surprising when picked up and shaken.
By the end of the session, each student will have created their own one-of-a-kind rattle cup — a playful and skill-building project that combines precision, creativity, and a bit of mystery!
About the Instructor:
Andra Galbin-Pristavu (they/he) is a mixed media artist who works primarily with ceramics and found materials. Andra’s work explores themes of trans and queer theory and culture with a focus on visibility and gender performativity. They combine raw materials with found objects to create scenes that combine comfort and discomfort, realistic elements with surrealist feelings. They enjoy the challenge of sculpting highly detailed renditions of personal and intimate objects, as well as bringing to life silly ceramic ideas that bring people joy.
