Workshop Description:
As spring is in full spring why not take the time to learn a new skill and slab built a vase! Kathy will guide you through the process of using clay slabs to create a tall cylindrical vase with adornments of your choosing! Show off your summer blossoms in a vase hand built by you!
About the Instructor:
Kathy grew up in Sydney, Australia where she graduated with a BA Design at UTS. She has worked in interior and furniture design, with continuing studies in photography, print making, silversmithing and ceramics.
Kathy moved to Vancouver, Canada in 2016 and began working with ceramics in 2019, when she established STUDIO EIGHTEEN. Her inspiration is drawn from architecture, from the shapes, shadows and contrast that these built spaces create. Her work is minimal, with the construction of material & form being the
fundamental focus.
Asymmetric designs and contrasting finishes are a feature of her jewellery collection, often leaving a section of raw ceramic exposed. Each piece is handmade with precision in small batches, at her home studio.
Creativity is at the core of every project Kathy embarks on.
Workshop Highlights:
Week 1: Creating vase and adornments
In this first week Kathy will guide you in creating a tall cylindrical vase using the slab method. Once the base of the vase is made you will have a chance to add adornments, such as geometric shapes, onto your vase to create a unique to your vase.
Week 2: Adding colour and design to the vase
In this second week, we are concentrating on decorating our vase using underglaze. Kathy will teach you her technique of getting sharp lines and opaque colours using underglaze.
Post Workshop:
- Student’s pieces will be clear glazed to create a clear shiny surface on the vase, making it watertight
