WHEEL THROWN CASSEROLE WORKSHOP

Ready to explore the art of lidded forms and functionality? This three-week advanced workshop dives into the design and construction of a wheel-thrown ceramic casserole—complete with lid, handles, and form-fitting functionality.

Led by Scott Pierce of Mise Tableware, this course is perfect for intermediate to advanced potters eager to refine their skills and take on a multi-component build rooted in everyday usability.

Worksop Schedule & Focus

Week 1 (August 19, 5:30–8 PM): Design & Throwing
We’ll start with a breakdown of casserole form and functionality—how wall thickness, lid fit, and handle placement contribute to its purpose. You’ll throw the main body and begin shaping components like lids and galleries.

Week 2 (August 26, 5:30–8 PM): Trimming & Assembly
This session focuses on refining form. We’ll trim, fine-tune lid fit, and attach handles—paying close attention to proportion, utility, and kiln-safe design.

Week 3 (September 2, 5:30–8 PM): Surface & Glazing
Finish your piece with intentional surface treatment. We'll explore how glaze choices and textural elements enhance both beauty and function.

Who this workshop is for

This is an advanced-level course. You should be able to confidently center and throw at least 3–5 lbs of clay, trim cleanly, and attach components with ease. If you're still developing these skills, we recommend taking CW 102 before joining this class.

Additional Info:

  • No make-up classes: Because of the tight schedule in this workshop, we are not able to offer make up sessions; Please register only if you can attend all three sessions.

Have questions about your readiness? Contact us before registering—we're happy to help you find the right fit.

We can't wait to help you take on one of the most satisfying forms in functional ceramics—see you in the studio!

Clay Experience Required:

Students should be capable of centering confidently and throwing cylinders with a minimum height of 4 inches unassisted. These are the skills required for success in this workshop. Students attending this class without these skills will not only have a difficult time but will also take valuable time away from other students.

We plan our class dates far in advance to provide adequate notice for you to plan your schedule around our workshops. We ask that future students registering for this class commit to all class dates. We understand that life happens, and we do allow for one free make-up session. Make-up sessions are intended for students to catch up on missed class time and are not supervised by the teacher. One Day Workshops do not qualify for make-up sessions.

Cancellation Policy:

Cancellations are accepted up to 7 days before the first workshop date, and all cancellations are subject to a $50 administration fee. Cancellations made 6 days or less before the workshop will not be refunded. Once a workshop has begun, refunds will not be processed.
